Mercedes GLC 250 Electric cuts the entry price, but also trims power and battery size
Mercedes has added a cheaper GLC 250 Electric to its electric SUV range in the UK, bringing a lower starting price with a single-motor layout, 349bhp and up to 389 miles of range.

Mercedes has expanded the GLC Electric line-up with a new entry-level GLC 250 Electric, giving UK buyers a cheaper way into the brand’s electric mid-size SUV. The new version starts at £55,495 in Sport trim, compared with £60,350 for the GLC 400 Electric Sport.
That makes the GLC 250 Electric £4,855 less expensive than the GLC 400 Electric at the base of the range. The saving is meaningful, but it comes with several technical changes: the GLC 250 uses a single-motor drivetrain rather than the dual-motor set-up of the GLC 400, and it also receives a smaller battery pack.
For buyers weighing up premium electric SUVs, this is not simply a new trim grade with fewer standard features. It changes the balance of price, performance, range and charging in the GLC Electric range.
Power drops, but performance is still strong
The GLC 250 Electric produces 349bhp. That is a sizeable step down from the 482bhp available in the GLC 400 Electric, but it is still a strong output for a family SUV and comfortably above what many combustion-engined GLC buyers would have considered normal only a few years ago.
Mercedes quotes a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds for the GLC 250 Electric. For context, that keeps the new entry model firmly in the brisk rather than basic category. Top speed is unchanged at 130mph for both the GLC 250 Electric and GLC 400 Electric. In real-world UK use, the more important difference will be traction and acceleration feel. The GLC 400’s dual-motor layout gives it substantially more power and likely broader performance reserves, while the GLC 250’s single-motor configuration is aimed at lowering cost and simplifying the package.
Mercedes has not positioned this as a long-range efficiency special. Instead, it appears to be a more affordable version designed to keep the core GLC Electric experience intact while making the car accessible to more buyers.
Smaller battery means the cheaper model does not go farther
One of the more important details is the battery size. The GLC 400 Electric uses a 95kWh battery, while the GLC 250 Electric is fitted with an 85kWh pack.
As a result, the lower-powered model does not deliver a range advantage. The GLC 250 Electric has a maximum claimed range of up to 389 miles, while the GLC 400 Electric can manage up to 405 miles.
That 16-mile difference is not huge, but it matters because some buyers might expect the less powerful, single-motor version to be the range champion. In this case, the smaller battery more than offsets any benefit from using one motor instead of two.
For most owners, 389 miles of claimed range will still be more than enough for daily commuting, school runs and regular motorway trips. As always with EVs, real-world range will vary with speed, weather, wheel size, cabin heating use and driving style. Buyers who regularly cover long motorway distances should look closely at expected real-world efficiency rather than relying only on the headline figure.
Charging remains a strength
The GLC 250 Electric’s charging specification is close to that of the more powerful GLC 400 Electric. Its maximum DC charging rate is 330kW, only 10kW lower than the GLC 400’s 340kW peak.
Mercedes says the GLC 250 Electric can charge from 20 to 80 per cent in 22 minutes. That matches the time quoted for the GLC 400, helped by the smaller battery capacity.
For owners who can use high-power public chargers, that keeps the GLC Electric competitive for longer journeys. A rapid top-up of that length can fit into a typical motorway stop, though peak charging rates depend heavily on charger capability, battery temperature and the car’s state of charge.
Home charging will remain the most convenient and cost-effective route for many private owners, but fast DC charging performance is increasingly important in this segment. Premium electric SUV buyers expect long-distance usability, not just strong range figures.
Chassis options carry over
The GLC 250 Electric is not stripped of the technology that helps define the wider GLC Electric range. Mercedes continues to offer optional air suspension and rear-wheel steering on the new version.
Those options could be particularly relevant for buyers using the GLC as a family car. Air suspension can improve comfort and body control, while rear-wheel steering can make a mid-size SUV feel more manoeuvrable in tight car parks and urban streets. It can also add stability at higher speeds, depending on how the system is calibrated.
The fact that these systems remain available helps the GLC 250 avoid feeling like a budget derivative. The main compromise is in drivetrain and battery specification, not necessarily in the chassis technology buyers can choose.

The GLC 250 Electric makes most sense for buyers who want the Mercedes cabin, design, technology and charging capability, but do not need the extra output of the GLC 400. It may also appeal to company-car users or finance customers if the lower list price improves monthly costs.
