Porsche Taycan Adds Simulated E-Shift Gears and Manthey Aero Kit

Porsche is adding a new layer of driver involvement to the Taycan with E-Shift, a software-based system that lets drivers click through eight simulated gears using the steering-wheel paddles. The update also brings a Manthey-developed body kit, a modest range improvement and infotainment revisions as Porsche continues to refine its first all-electric performance car.

The headline change is not a conventional gearbox. The Taycan remains an electric car, and most versions of the model use the familiar EV formula of instant torque without a multi-speed transmission for normal driving. E-Shift instead creates the sensation of gear changes through software, sound and torque management. Drivers can leave the system to work automatically or select a manual mode and shift through eight virtual ratios with the paddles.

Porsche says the system is designed to reproduce some of the sensations associated with a combustion-engine sports car. That includes perceptible shift events, gear-dependent deceleration behavior and a simulated rev limiter. The Taycan’s Porsche Electric Sport Sound system also plays a role, using interior and exterior speakers to give the virtual powertrain a more distinct character.

What E-Shift changes — and what it does not

For buyers, the most important point is that E-Shift is about feel, not a new mechanical layout. It does not turn the Taycan into an EV with eight physical forward gears. Instead, it gives drivers an optional way to interact with the car that is closer to a paddle-shifted performance model.

That is the broader significance of E-Shift. Porsche is not alone in exploring simulated gear changes and engineered EV sound. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has already shown that a software-defined shift experience can make an electric performance car feel more playful and more familiar to drivers raised on combustion-engine hot hatches and sports cars. Porsche’s adoption of a similar idea on the Taycan suggests this kind of digital driving character is moving from novelty to a more accepted tool in performance EV development.

For enthusiasts, the debate will be immediate. Some will see virtual shifting as artificial, especially in a car whose real strengths include immediate response and seamless acceleration. Others will appreciate that Porsche is giving drivers a choice rather than forcing a single EV personality. The execution will matter: if the shift timing, sound and torque modulation feel natural, E-Shift could make the Taycan more engaging on a favorite road. If it feels too staged, owners may simply leave it switched off.

Manthey kit adds a more focused look

Porsche is also introducing a body kit from Manthey, the racing and performance specialist closely associated with Porsche’s track-focused models. The package gives the Taycan a more aggressive visual and aerodynamic treatment, aimed at customers who want their electric sedan or wagon to look more like a motorsport-influenced performance car.

Full component-by-component details and performance claims were not specified in the information released with the update, so buyers should wait for final market documentation before assuming changes to downforce, drag, efficiency or lap-time capability. Turbo GT buyers will get the system as standard, which makes sense for the most performance-focused version of the car. Buyers of other Taycan models should check whether the option is bundled with other packages, whether it requires Porsche Electric Sport Sound, and how much it adds to the final price.

Current Taycan owners will also want to know whether any of these features can be retrofitted through software or dealer-installed parts. That has not been clearly established for E-Shift, and the Manthey body kit is likely to depend on model, body style and market approval.
